The spat followed an even bigger brawl late into the fourth quarter, which resulted in the suspension of Lakers forward Brandon Ingram, Lakers guard Rajon Rondo, and, naturally, Paul, who was being escorted off the court when he crossed paths with Kiedis.

Punishment from the fight between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets on Saturday will affect the Suns' upcoming game against the Lakers. Ingram will sit out four games, Rondo will miss three and CP3 in total will miss two games.

Rockets player Eric Gordon, who started in place of Paul in Houston's loss against the LA Clippers on Monday [AEST], also defended his teammate, saying: "If somebody is attacking you, you got to protect yourself".

When asked earlier Sunday if Rondo spit on Paul, Lakers coach Luke Walton said, "No". This led to Rondo landing a clean left hook on Paul and more punches being thrown. Clearly frustrated, Ingram then proceeded to shove Harden from behind, then got in the face of the referee and was vociferously arguing with him.

That sparked a fracas that saw Rondo connect with a punch to Paul's face after Paul had poked a finger in Rondo's face.

"We don't want this to happen again", National Basketball Association executive vice president Kiki van de Weghe said.

In the heat of the moment, when somebody does that, I mean that's tough.

Rajon Rondo, who was similarly ejected, had 13 points and 10 assists for L.A. and JaVale McGee, who won a ring with the Golden State Warriors last season, tallied 16 and six rebounds. The Rockets went on to win the game 124-115, further spoiling James' home debut with the Lakers. That's blatant disrespect. You don't do that. Rondo claims the spitting didn't happen and Paul instigated. With Paul out of the lineup, Eric Gordon slid into the starting lineup and James Harden handled the point guard duties for the majority of the game. "I think we owe it to ourselves to start from the beginning with this guy and see what we can accomplish". "It's just not equitable".
