Caravan migrants break Guatemala border fence, rush Mexico

  • Trump threatens to send army to US-Mexico border in migrant row

A caravan of some 3,000 migrants fleeing Honduras is continuing to walk north to the U.S. border, as Trump threatened to deploy the military and close the U.S. -Mexico border.

Even the recently renegotiated North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Mexico, the United States and Canada, which is now known as USMCA, could be under threat, Trump said.

There are already about 2,000 National Guard troops stationed along the USA border with Mexico, where they have been deployed since Trump ordered them there in April in response to another group of migrants that attempted to seek refugee status in the United States. Earlier this year, some National Guard members were deployed to the border on a limited mission that does not include contact with migrants.

But Marcelo Ebrard, who has been picked as Mexico's next foreign minister, downplayed the comments and said Trump was appealing to his domestic political base.

Vigil said he believes Trump is partly to blame for the recent exodus from Honduras because of US involvement in the country's contested presidential election past year.

But at least five U.S. states later refused to send the troops amid an outcry over a since-abandoned White House policy to separate migrant children from their parents at the border.

This year's group began traveling from Honduras on October 13 and has swollen to 4,000.

Bartolo Fuentes, a former Honduran congressman, was arrested hours after Mr Trump tweeted on Tuesday: "The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S.is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!"

Locals said they had been warned by Mexican authorities not to carry people.

In contrast to the earlier caravan, which moved deeper into the interior of Mexico before officials began intensive efforts to process the migrants, the Mexican government has focused on the new group right on its southern border with Guatemala.

More than 2,000 Hondurans are in a migrant caravan trying to reach the United States.

As thousands of Central American men, women and children travel en masse to the Mexican border to escape extreme violence in their homelands, many are doing so knowing the lengthy trip holds hidden dangers that could be fatal for their families.

Cristian, who is among the informal leaders of the caravan, estimated about 30 percent of the migrants want to apply for refugee status in Mexico.

"(Criminals) have infrastructure that is built up already and are put into place inside the caravans", he said.

Mexican authorities, in a bid to soothe Mr Trump's fury and to deter the migrants, without appearing to violate global law, have asked the United Nations to set up a migrant processing centre near its southern border. And he threatened to send troops to "shut down" the southern USA border if Mexico failed to stop what he called an "onslaught".

"We have evidence that this caravan is also very much politically motivated", he claimed.
