‘Strong evidence’ Elizabeth Warren may be a little Native American after all

  • Elizabeth Warren Reveals DNA Evidence of Native American Ancestry, Rebuking Trump

Kim TallBear, the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples, Technoscience and Environment at the University of Alberta, issued a statement saying "For Elizabeth Warren to centre a Native American ancestry test as the next move in her fight with Republicans is to make yet another strike - even if unintended - against tribal sovereignty". Warren has claimed that her great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, also had Native American heritage.

A cousin who is identified as being a member of the Cherokee Nation adds: "It's offensive to me, not just as Betsy's cousin, but as a Native-American". It originally reported that meant Warren had as low as a 1/512 claim of native ancestry. "What do the facts say?" she asks him.

The professor concluded that most of the senator's DNA showed European ancestry but that it had a Native American segment. According to her own admission, she used those family stories to partially define her character in the past - and that past caught up with her. Adversaries like Donald Trump latched on to the idea that Warren was a bold-faced liar and started using her "supposed" Native heritage as a rallying cry to defame her.

The genealogy group has said it has no conclusive evidence of her ancestry, and a spokesman said Monday it would not comment on the genetic findings. It's possible, in other words, that Fauxcahontas is less native than the typical white American.

That forefather - or foremother - could have been between six and 10 generations ago, meaning she could be as much as 1/64 Native American, or as little as 1/1024.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter mocked Warren's results and compared them to her chances of being president. I think this is part of her spin strategy: Knowing how embarrassing this all looks for her, the only way out is to go on offense. As she states on her website, "Donald Trump uses racism, sexism, homophobia, bigotry and hate to divide and distract us while he rigs the system for the rich and powerful".

"Let's say I'm debating Pocahontas", he said at a rally.

'Why can't Dems ever stay focused???' he vented.

During a recent town hall-style meeting in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Warren said she planned to "take a hard look at running for president", after next month's election. "Who cares?" His remarks came before he and First Lady Melania Trump headed to Florida and Georgia to visit with the victims of Hurricane Michael.

In September, Warren released personnel files from her appointments at various law schools in the hopes of answering questions about whether she benefited from her Native American ancestry in hiring.

In the South it became known as the "one-drop rule, " meaning that a single drop of "black blood" makes a person a black. But will he pony up on his promise to donate $1 million to charity if Warren were to take a DNA test "and it shows you're an Indian"?
