  • Hurricane Michael Is Most Powerful Storm To Hit Florida Panhandle: Help With Red Cross

"Our hearts are with the thousands who have sustained property damage, in many cases entirely wiped out", Trump said. "So many families have lost everything".

The Category 4 storm made landfall Wednesday afternoon amid beach resorts and coastal communities, packing 155 miles per hour (250 kph) winds.

Florida officials moved patients from damaged health care facilities. About 3,500 Florida National Guard troops were deployed, along with more than 1,000 search-and-rescue personnel, governor Rick Scott said.

Which areas are worst affected?

In its latest advisory, the National Hurricane Center said Michael is producing heavy rainfall and tropical-storm-force wind gusts over the Carolinas.

Among those brought to safety were nine people rescued by helicopter from a bathroom of their Panama City home after their roof collapsed, Petty Officer 3rd Class Ronald Hodges said.

Twenty survivors were found in the town overnight, AP reports, but 285 had refused to obey warnings to evacuate.

Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long said he expected the death toll to rise.

State and local officials have sought to avoid a repeat of problems previous year that authorities say led to the deaths of Broward County nursing-home residents after Hurricane Irma.

Apalachicola, with 2,300 residents, was also badly affected, the mayor reporting that downed cables were making it hard to get through the town. "My father is responsible for all of the seafood that's in our area, literally millions and millions of dollars of seafood, and he feels compelled to stay to make sure those seafood houses are back up and running as soon as the storm passes", she said.

Roads to Mexico Beach were virtually impassable, so Baldwin, who spent the night in nearby Destin, Fla., chartered a chopper to get the view from above.

No wind, nearly no-one on the street, just the beating hot Sun and the debris: debris everywhere, tossed and scattered - the calling card of a monstrous storm.

"It sounded like a freight train coming from every direction", she added. "Right now, we need the church's prayers and financial assistance".

Picking our way through a mass of rubble and detritus that was once a house, we spot an American flag on the ground; in amongst it all there is also a toy auto and a cracked glass plate from a microwave.

She said the neighbor used binoculars to look across the lake at Jeff McCall's home, and said the roof appeared to be intact. "Roofs are gone", Principal Britt Smith told CNN after talking by phone with some of those who did not evacuate.

Hurricane Michael's battering waves swamped streets and docks and shrieking winds splintered trees and rooftops.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said it rescued at least 27 people, mostly from homes damaged along the Florida coastline, and searched for more victims.

An 11-year-old girl was also killed by a falling tree in Seminole County as the hurricane reached Georgia.

"This is total devastation", she told CNN. Becker said about 55 people were in the shelters early Thursday.

Schools will stay closed indefinitely, a hospital halted operations and sent 200 patients to hospitals elsewhere in Florida and in Alabama, and more than 253,000 customers in the Panhandle remain without power.

What is the storm doing now?

MIAMI Tropical Storm Michael has sped off toward the Atlantic Ocean, but there will be nothing quick about Florida's recovery from the hurricane, where rows upon rows of homes have been smashed to pieces. Street flooding was reported in Roanoke and other southwestern Virginia cities that reported motorists caught in flooding had to be rescued. Neither state is fully recovered from last month's Hurricane - or well-equipped to absorb more heavy rains.
