Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday as a "potentially catastrophic" Category 4 storm - the strongest hurricane on record to hit the area - and continued to charge north, wreaking havoc and prompting emergencies.

Willis said that a team was still working in Crawford County to assess the damage and intensity of the tornado.

Underlining the unpredictability of modern storms, a category one hurricane dubbed Leslie was heading Saturday on a highly unusual path toward the Iberian peninsula.

The devastation inflicted by Hurricane Michael came into focus Thursday with rows upon rows of homes found smashed to pieces, and rescue crews began making their way into the stricken areas in hopes of accounting for hundreds of people who may have stayed behind. Numerous buildings in Panama City were demolished or left without roofs amid deserted streets littered with debris, twisted, fallen tree trunks and dangling wires.

"Hurricane Michael is the worst storm that the Florida Panhandle has ever seen", said Governor Rick Scott of Florida, where 375,000 people were ordered evacuated.

Josh Brown's dad later tweeted out the FSU football's Janarius Robinson, a Panama city native, had lost his home in the storm. What used to be a gorgeous beachfront city now looks like an apocalyptic mess. "She's my baby", a distraught O'Brien said, her face wet with tears.

The Coast Guard said it rescued at least 27 people before and after the hurricane's landfall, mostly from coastal homes. Forecasters said it could drop up to 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain over the Carolinas and Virginia before pushing out to sea Thursday night.

- A GoFundMe page has been set up for an 11-year-old girl killed in southwest Georgia during Hurricane Michael. Based on wind speed, it was the fourth-strongest, behind the Labor Day storm (184 miles per hour, or 296 kph), Camille and Andrew in 1992.

Across the storm-hit region in the United States, relief efforts were shaping up.

Briefing President Donald Trump at the White House, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long said Michael was the most intense hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle since 1851.

Tyndall Air Force base evacuated most staff and all aircraft on Monday - just before they "took a direct hit" from the category four Hurricane Michael. When it landed, its legs crashed through the roof of a neighboring mobile home and hit the girl in the head.

This year marks the third consecutive year the state of Florida has been hit by hurricanes, following Irma in 2017 and Matthew in 2016. That warming ocean waters would lead to more frequent and stronger storms has been the consensus opinion of climate scientists for decades, yet no action has been taken by either the Republican or Democratic parties.

In Florida there was the first victim of hurricane Michael which struck the Northern coast of the state on Wednesday, October 10, writes The Guardian. State officials say Florida's largest psychiatric hospital has been "entirely cut off".

Linda Marquardt, 67, rode out the storm with her husband at their home in Mexico Beach.

Sarah loved to perform, her father said. Franklin County Sheriff A.J Smith told CNN that the county was almost isolated after most of the main roads were rendered impassable from flooding and downed trees.

Here are some other facts that show the power of this "monstrous storm". A few stores were reopening, and cars lined up at the few open gas stations. But emergency authorities lamented that many people ignored the warnings. Smith, in Gadsden County, said the situation was risky even for emergency personnel. Sgt. Angela Hightower did not identify the man but said he had been found at the home in Greensboro around 6 p.m. Nine people had to be rescued by helicopter from a bathroom of a home in hard-hit Panama City after their roof collapsed, Petty Officer 3rd Class Ronald Hodges said.
