Pakistan vs Australia: Dubai witnesses a rare instance in Test cricket

  • Australia will play the fourth Test against South Africa at Wanderers in Johannesburg

But Australia did well in the last 29 overs of the day with seamers getting the reverse swing and the spinners also finding some turn off the wicket.

(Dunya News) - The first Test match of two-match series between Australia and Pakistan ended in draw as Australian skipper Paine defied odds to survive almost fifteen overs with the tail.

The 33-year-old helped Pakistan derail Australia from a solid 142-0 to 202 all out on the second day in the first test, just behind Mohammad Zahid 7-66 against New Zealand at Rawalpindi in 1994 and 7-99 by Mohammad Nazir against New Zealand in Karachi in 1969.

Barring that error, Hafeez looked in full control during his 208-ball knock which contained 15 hits to the fence.

"Pakistan played very well and had us under the pump for three days", Paine said at the post match presentation ceremony.

Australia's most prolific offspinner continued to ask questions of the Pakistani openers but Holland made a nervous start to his Test return, going for eight off his first over and conceding an Imam six over midwicket in his fourth over. The Australian batsmen have put on a sensational resistance on the final day of the match and Imam's injury weakens the strong top-order of Pakistan come the second Test.

"People think because of my relaxed nature. that I've been gifted to be able to get to where I am", he said.

Khawaja extended his fourth-wicket stand with Travis Head (72 off 175) - the latter striking a maiden Test fifty on debut - to 132 during a wicketless morning session, albeit that Head would have been out lbw to Shah for 44 had Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed opted for the review.

Pakistan in their first innings scored 482 runs with Muhammad Hafeez and Haris Sohail making tons.

Yasir Shah took his first in the match when he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for 13.

An all-too-familiar batting collapse has exposed Australia's frailties in Asia and left the tourists battling to save the first test against Pakistan after losing 10 wickets for just 60 runs.

Holland had figures of 3-83 from 20 overs while off-spinner Nathan Lyon took 2-58.
