Brees is now third behind Brett Favre and Peyton Manning with 71,740 yards in his career.

Brees previously set an National Football League record for most career completions in Week 3, surpassing Favre's mark of 6,300 as he connected with wide receiver Michael Thomas on a 17-yard pass against the Falcons. He signed with New Orleans in the 2017 offseason and spent four games with the Saints before they traded him to Arizona.

The Redskins (2-2) next take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Of course, the record shouldn't distract the Saints from the task at hand.

Brees completed 26 of 29 passes and threw three touchdown passes, giving him 499 for his career. It was running back Mark Ingram's first game after serving a four-game suspension and he powered his way to two first-half touchdowns and had a Pierre Thomas-esque screen pass go for 27 yards. Next season he's likely to become the record-holder in attempts (Brett Favre has 10,169) and touchdowns (Manning has 539).

The Saints' Smith, a third-round draft choice last spring, caught two touchdown passes from the 18th-year pro. Five years after his career ends, Brees will be able to visit that football and other items from his sure-to-be Hall of fame career.

Dustin Hopkins kicked field goals of 37 and 53 yards for Washington, which also had a 4-yard touchdown run from Alex Smith to pull within 26-13 at half-time.
