  • Kavanaugh Hires Court's First All-Female Team of Clerks

It capped a fight that seized the national conversation after allegations emerged that Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted women three decades ago. Mr Kavanaugh emphatically denied the allegations.

Just a couple of days ago, Trump said of Kavanaugh from Egypt, where she ended her first major official trip overseas without her husband President Donald Trump, "I think he's highly qualified for the Supreme Court".

He said Saturday he thinks Republicans "are going to do incredibly well" in the midterm elections after Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Banks said Ford "knows" who assaulted her, disputing the idea popular among some Republicans that Ford was assaulted but had mistaken her assaulter's identity.

One of Kavanaugh's most vocal supporters, Sen. "Frankly we are just less than a month away from an election". Gov. John Kasich of OH predicted "a good year" for Democrats in the November elections and said he wonders about "the soul of our country" in the long term after the tumultuous hearings.

Hirono also said Sunday that her party should focus on the upcoming elections "like a laser beam" despite calls from some progressives to impeach Kavanaugh if Democrats take control of the House of Representatives.

Although Kavanaugh was formally sworn in as a Supreme Court justice on Saturday evening after the final voting - while angry protesters banged on the huge front doors of the court building in Washington - there was due to be a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House on Monday evening where Trump himself will administer the oath of office.

Ultimately, every Democrat voted against Kavanaugh except for Sen.

Ford addressed the harassment against her in prepared remarks to the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she said: "My family and I have been the target of constant harassment and death threats".

Trump said he once told Kavanaugh that his confirmation would be a "piece of cake".

Trump has now put his stamp on the court with his second justice in as many years. "I respect that decision, and we would hope that the court will now move in a direction where they can make decisions".

The two-vote margin of victory made it the closest Supreme Court confirmation vote since 1881 - and by far the most contentious since Clarence Thomas in 1991.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, speaking on the floor right before the 50-48 vote, said the country needs to have a reckoning on Kavanaugh and the Senate process. "A total coward." The Arizona Republican, who is retiring, voted for Kavanaugh. "I think you're going to see a lot of things happen on November 6 that would not have happened before", Trump said Monday as he departed for an event in Florida. Lindsey Graham of SC, a Republican on the judiciary committee, told Fox News, "I'm happy because the effort to railroad and humiliate this man failed".

Republicans, meanwhile, are pushing to pick up seats in increasingly Democratic Colorado and OR while keeping them in most of New England as well as the South and much of the West.

"He's a great person and it was very, very unfair what happened to him", Trump said during remarks to the International Association of Chiefs of Police's annual convention.

But Monday marked the first time Trump has assigned a motive to Democrats or suggested the claims of any of Kavanaugh's accusers were intentional fiction.
