French investigators have launched a probe into the "alarming" disappearance of Hongwei Meng, the Chinese president of Interpol, French media reported Friday. The Interpol head travelled to China at the end of September.

"An investigation has been opened by French police about the disappearance of the Chinese president of Interpol", a French official told ABC News.

Hongwei, 64, was elected president of Interpol in November 2016.

"He left Lyon for China last week".

But, Hatton notes, Meng's situation is unusual because his wife reported him missing so quickly.

While there are no public allegations against him, Meng, a member of the ruling Communist Party, likely worked closely with former security chief and Politburo Standing Committee member Zhou Yongkang, who is now serving a life sentence for corruption.

Interpol staff can carry special passports to help speed deployment in emergency situations but that would not have given Meng any specific rights or immunity in his home country.

Interpol president has been reported missing after travelling to his native country China. France, China and Interpol officials are yet to comment on the reports.

The organisation's secretary general, not Meng, was responsible for the day-to-day running of Interpol, it said.

The Interpol president has not been in touch since September 29. His term is expected to run until 2020, according to Interpol's website.

Meng's wife, who has remained in Lyon with their children according to police sources, was receiving protection, it said, adding: "Exchanges with Chinese authorities continue".
