He reiterated his earlier claims Tuesday that nowadays you are "guilty until proven innocent", and stepped up his line of argument that men are under attack in America, without mentioning survivors of sexual assault.

Mr Trump was speaking to reporters at the White House. His daughters who are attractive, incredible young kids - they destroy people, they want to destroy people.

The lawyers' concerns emerged amid reports that the FBI could wind up its investigation well before the deadline of this Friday.

It's not now clear whether the Republican leadership has secured enough votes to ensure Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation.

The nomination has become a politically explosive issue just weeks before November 6 elections, when control of Congress is at stake. Some Republicans fear that pushing ahead with confirmation could alienate women voters, while Democrats seek to capitalize.

■New questions are being raised by Democrats about whether, sexual misconduct allegations aside, Kavanaugh has been truthful about his drinking, and has showed the proper temperament to be a judge on the nation's highest court.

The latest Supreme Court session opened on Monday, with eight justices.

"You could be somebody that was flawless your entire life and somebody could accuse you of something - doesn't necessarily have to be a woman - but somebody could accuse you of something and you're automatically guilty".

"Hopefully, they'll have a vote by the end of the week and it will be a positive vote, but it will be dependent on what comes back from the FBI", Trump said.

The rising frustration came as the Kavanaugh confirmation process played out before the country, with Kavanaugh and Ford appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week to discuss her accusation.

"What neighbourhood was it in?" I don't know. Where's the house? I don't know. I don't know. But I had one beer.

The audience laughed as the president said: "Thirty-six years ago this happened: I had one beer! His credibility is in real doubt - doubt enough for a lot of Americans to say this man should not be on the Supreme Court".

Kavanaugh has denied the accusations by Ford and Ramirez and those by a third woman, Julie Swetnick, who has alleged she was victimized at a party attended by Kavanaugh friends. One of them is Republican Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was greeted by hundreds of liberal protesters, victims of sexual assault among them, during an appearance Monday in Boston. I have it myself all the time. "We simply can't", Flake, who is retiring as a senator in January, said at an event in Washington.

And on Tuesday, Schumer called for a briefing by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the full Senate before a vote on whether to move Kavanaugh's nomination forward.

The 100-person Senate is controlled by the Republicans (51-49) but as the midterms are approaching, it may not stay that way for long.

A spokesman for McConnell noted that the agreement with Flake and other swing senators was to have a procedural vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation by Friday, so the majority leader would have to take steps to tee up that vote on Wednesday.

■The stories about the expansion of the investigation broke after Trump said at a midday news conference on Monday that he wanted the FBI probe "to be comprehensive, whatever that means, according to the senators and the Republicans and the Republican majority". McConnell has said the Senate will be voting on Kavanaugh this week.

Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana, a Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, said Kavanaugh has only been responding to Democratic attacks.

Judge has said that he has no memory of the alleged incident and never saw Kavanaugh behave like that.
