McConnell vows Kavanaugh vote will happen this week despite political 'mudslide'

  • Just after the gavel came down and the hearing came to a close on Sept. 28 Sen. Jeff Flake is surrounded by fellow Sens. Thom Tillis above left Mike Crapo and Lindsey Graham, lower right. Flake had just appealed for a delay on Brett

Kavanaugh, whose Senate confirmation has been thrown into doubt by the accusations, has denied the claims by all three women. He said: "The FBI needs to be allowed to pursue all reasonable investigatory steps from the credible allegations in front of the committee."Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the chamber would vote this week on Kavanaugh, a conservative federal appeals court judge in Washington".

Kavanaugh testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary committee regarding sexual assault allegations at the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, in Washington, DC, U.S. September 27, 2018.

McConnell again seized on the way in which Judiciary Committee Democrats dealt with the original allegations raised by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, saying that it opened the door to what he described Tuesday as, "a deluge of uncorroborated, unbelievable mud". In the widely spread video, she was shouting at Sen.

Following questions about the scope and extent of the FBI investigation, a White House official also told CNN that the White House has made it clear to the FBI that agents are not limited in their expanded background search. Kavanaugh denied the accusation, as well as allegations by two other women of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. Trump did not elaborate. In a statement to media, Chad Ludington, a Yale classmate of Kavanaugh, said the judge was not truthful about his drinking during his Senate testimony last week and that at Yale, Kavanaugh was "a frequent drinker and a heavy drinker" who often got belligerent and aggressive when drunk.

Swetnick did not identify Kavanaugh or Judge as one of her attackers. Last week, Swetnick accused Kavanaugh in an affidavit of sexual misconduct at drunken high school parties. Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations.

The votes of the three aforementioned Republicans and those of red-state Democrats Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, will largely determine whether Kavanaugh is confirmed.

Mr Flake, who is retiring as a senator in January, is seen as a potentially key figure in any vote in the full Senate on whether to confirm Mr Kavanaugh.

Avenatti, who has said he is considering a Democratic run for the presidency in 2020, is also representing Stormy Daniels, the adult-film actress who was paid to remain silent about an alleged affair with President Trump. He said he expects senators to hurry over to the Judiciary Committee to read it once it's done.

Walsh has said his client doesn't know Kavanaugh and has no recollection of ever being at a party with him.

Appearing at the Forbes Under 30 Summit in Boston, Flake said on Monday that he wants the FBI to conduct a "real investigation" and not one that "just gives us more cover".

He said the Democrats are undermining Kavanaugh's credibility and are "willing to do anything or hurt anyone" to submarine his agenda. But the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation vote will move forward.

"We debated the balanced budget amendment", he said and then added a dramatic mock yawn. If all Democratic senators vote against Kavanaugh, Republicans - who have a 51-49 edge in the Senate - can only afford to lose one vote to get the judge's confirmation passed.

Heitkamp, meanwhile, noted that Trump himself called for a "broader" FBI investigation into the allegations.

Mr McConnell said: "The time for endless delay and obstruction has come to a close".

"The White House isn't intervening, we are not micromanaging this process", she said.

"Hopefully, they'll have a vote by the end of the week and it will be a positive vote, but it will be dependent on what comes back from the FBI", Trump said.
