'Vamos!': Garcia firing up Europe at Ryder Cup

  • Francesco Molinari right and Tommy Fleetwood have been unbeatable at the Ryder Cup

The match was all square briefly after a Woods birdie on the 12th, but Rahm won the next two holes and eventually closed out the 14-time major champion 2 and 1, paving the way for a European team win.

The celebration and singing had already begun. He wound up losing both his matches.

Leading 10-6 going into the 12 singles matches, there were some nervous moments on an exciting afternoon as the Americans occasionally threatened a comeback.

When you throw in the emotional drain of winning the Tour Championship for his 80th career triumph, Woods certainly looks like someone dealing with a severe letdown.

Woods played down his teammate's horror show, though, admitting that it was a similar story to 24 hours before, when they lost 3 and 1 to Molinari and Fleetwood.

Woods' record in Ryder Cup matches is now 13-21-3 - an abysmal record for a player who has enjoyed so much individual success. "When it was there for us, Europe played really well". US captain Jim Furyk chose not to disrupt his pairings from Friday, altering only the golfers' order of play, and Team Europe continued its dominance in the early Saturday fourball matches.

The duo known as "Moliwood" led from the very first hole on the way to a 5-and-4 whipping, the match ending when DeChambeau missed a birdie putt at the par-5 14th hole, before it even reached a closing stretch that looks like something out of Waterworld.

'I've always respected the way he's treated me, so it was pretty cool getting thrown out there in the first match and playing against him'.

'I'm hoping that can turn the tide for us'.

"This is the best team room I've ever been in".

World number one Johnson and Fowler notched the first point of the first Ryder Cup to be held in France, 4 and 2 against McIlroy and Thorbjorn Olesen. Spieth is now 0-6 in singles matches in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

McIlroy and Sergio Garcia led the way.

Team Europe's Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton with Team Europe captain Thomas Bjorn during the Fourballs. That final victory over Rickie Fowler made Garcia the biggest contributor in Ryder Cup history with 25½ points.

The reigning Masters champion endured a nightmare round on Saturday, hitting multiple balls into the water, spending much of his time in the rough, and even hitting one tee shot out of bounds and nearly into a spectator shopping area.

"We took a really tough loss at Hazeltine a couple of years ago and that stung, " McIlroy said.
