Indonesia's geophysics agency confirmed Friday's Sulawesi natural disaster triggered a tsunami, AP and Reuters report.

A year earlier, in 2005, a quake measuring 8.7 magnitude struck off the coast of Sumatra, which is particularly prone to quakes, killing 900 people and injuring 6,000.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the preliminary magnitude at 7.5 and added that it was followed by a series of smaller aftershocks.

Another 6.1 magnitude quake had hit the same area just hours earlier. The water smashed into buildings and a large mosque already damaged by the natural disaster.

Amateur footage shows huge wave crashing into an Indonesian city of Palu. "All national potential will be deployed and Saturday morning we will deploy Hercules and helicopters to provide assistance in affected areas". Initial reports from the area said "many buildings" had collapsed.

He said houses were swept away and families were reported missing.

Dwikorita Karnawati, the chief of Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency, told Reuters that the tsunami "receded", but it caused severe damage.


Hospitals were overwhelmed by the influx of injured, with many people being treated in the open air, while other survivors helped to retrieve the remains of those who died.

"The (second) quake was felt very strongly, we expect more damage and more victims", Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, BNPB spokesperson said.

People in Central Sulawesi and West Sulawesi provinces were only then told to evacuate to higher ground.

The quake and aftershocks came about a month after an natural disaster killed as many as 500 on the island of Lombok in Indonesia, according to The Weather Channel.

"Telecommunication operators have been trying to use mobile backup power to reactivate the telecommunication network", Minister Rudiantara said in a press statement on Friday night. The water smashed into buildings and a large mosque already damaged by the quake.

Local media reports that the airport at Palu has been closed until Saturday evening.

A tsunami in 2004, triggered by an quake off the island of Sumatra, killed more than 120,000 Indonesians and 226,000 people across the Indian Ocean.
