Golf Fans Rejoice As Tiger Woods Ends Drought, Wins Tour Championship

  • Tiger Woods wins his first Tour victory in over five years at the Tour Championship

After multiple promising starts this season, Woods was able to string together four brilliant rounds over the weekend to get the first win of his comeback at the TOUR Championship, taking the trophy with a final score of 11-under par.

Tiger Woods has won a PGA Tour event for the first time in over five years after victory at the Tour Championship.

"All of a sudden it started hitting me I was going to win the tournament".

The world of sports have witnessed many comebacks before, but Woods winning the Tour Championship for his 80th career victory has the makings of a Hollywood story.

None of it solves the problem of what golf does when Woods finally retires, or more pertinently what Woods does when he steps away.

"There was a point in time I didn't know if I'd ever do this again", Woods said.

The only disappointment - a minor one under the circumstances - was realizing as he came down the 18th that Rose had made birdie to finish in a three-way tie for fourth, which gave him the FedEx Cup and the $10 million bonus. He had spent the week playing what he called "very conservative" golf, aiming to "make sure I dump the ball 30, 40 feet from the hole and trust my lag putting", yet still registered 65-68-65.

"It was just a grind out there", Woods said of his final round.

But that needle looked broken beyond fix as days without a win grew to months, the months without a win grew to years.

Without that birdie, Woods would have won his third FedEx Cup title after starting at No. 20 going into the Tour Championship. I was just hoping for a better lifestyle.

Now he is expected to go to No. 13 in the world after dropping as low as 1,199th late previous year.

1,199 - Woods' ranking in the world in November 2017. It was really special to see them at the green on 18.

Not only did it end Woods' five-year wait, it moved the 14-time major champion within two victories of Snead's record. Heading into the Tour Championship, he was 12-1, behind then-Masters favorite Jordan Spieth.

This was Woods' first victory since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2013.

"The pain he had to endure, the things he had to do just to play and just how hard it was for him to walk, and he ended up walking 36 holes (in one day) and winning a US Open".

He still describes himself accurately as "42 years old with a fused lower spine".

Woods built a five-shot lead at the turn, and despite bogeys at the 10th, 15th and 16th holes held off his fast-finishing compatriot Billy Horschel, who carded a 66 for second place on nine-under.

Woods' stunning return to form has also seen him return to the Ryder Cup as a player for the first time since 2012.
