  • Emmys Opening Number Mockingly Pats Hollywood on the Back for Progress on Diversity: ‘We Solved it!’

It was another big night for streaming television at the Emmy Awards, and Amazon cemented its place in the mix with a leading five awards for its comedy series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" on Monday in Los Angeles.

The Amazon television show about a 1950s housewife who turns to stand-up comedy won four Emmys in the first hours, including for Rachel Brosnahan's lead role as a 1950s housewife who turns to stand-up after a divorce. First off, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has made Emmy history, collecting awards for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

Last year Lena Waithe made history by becoming the first African-American woman to win the comedy writing statue (she shared it with Aziz Ansari for "Master of None"), and she was the most recent female victor before Sherman-Palladino.

In the end, none of the winners at the show level were surprises: RuPaul's Drag Race, Last Week Tonight, and Saturday Night Live won in reality and variety categories.

Especially in the first half of the show, a pall hung over the ceremony as if much of the crowd had been heavily sedated.

Maisel star picked up the gong for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and looked stunning for the occasion in a plunging silver gown with flared sleeves.

During their opening co-hosts Michael Che and Colin Joust got in some jabs as well, with Che joking that his mother didn't watch the Emmys because it was mostly white people and they "don't thank Jesus".

The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards nabbed a 7.4 overnight rating for NBC. And even if they were, this year's show - its highlights notwithstanding - certainly wouldn't be a candidate to land one.

HBO, now part of AT&T, won the outstanding drama award for Game of Thrones, a fantasy epic set in the land of Westeros. Early reaction on Twitter seemed good, with one user saying, "This may be the best open ever" and another posting, "Holy shit they are killing this Emmy's bit". Oscars director Glenn Weiss stunned the celebs by proposing to his girlfriend from the podium. That number is down 10% from previous year, which ended up tying for the lowest viewership in Emmy history.

Murphy won an award Monday night for his directing on FX's American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which also earned outstanding limited series. A final big Emmy win would've been the flawless send-off for The Americans, and certainly one that's absolutely merited.
