Democrats Have Ensured Brett Kavanaugh Will Never Get A Fair Hearing

  • Kavanaugh accuser said to be willing to testify before US Senate committee

Ford told the Post that Kavanaugh "was trying to attack me and remove my clothing" at a teenagers' party one summer in the early 1980s.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who chairs the judiciary committee, said in a statement Monday that he's looking for a way that lawmakers can hear from Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, "in an appropriate, precedented, and respectful manner".

"Because this never happened, I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday", Kavanaugh said in a statement Monday.

The suit combines three requests that Democrats on the committee submitted in August to the National Archives, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Bush library for documents relating to the six years Kavanaugh spent at the Bush White House as senior associate counsel and staff secretary to the president.

What does Ford say happened? .

Ford told the Post that she recalled being at a party with Kavanaugh in the summer of 1982, when she was 15 and Kavanaugh was 17.

At one point, Leahy specified particular email that Kavanaugh received while working for the White House Counsel's office, having to do with information Leahy was interested in regarding a judicial confirmation.

It's worth remembering that these Democrat tactics aren't only meant to sink this nomination - should they end up forcing Kavanaugh to withdraw - but also to damage the credibility of any Supreme Court featuring Trump-nominated (or, let's be honest, Republican-nominated) justices.

Mr Kavanaugh made the remark after the accused, Christine Blasey Ford, said via her attorney that she was ready to testify in public.

She is willing to tell her story publicly, her lawyer, Debra Katz, said Monday on NBC's "Today" show.

All 10 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee wrote a letter to Grassley on Monday calling for a delay in Thursday's committee vote while the FBI fully investigates the allegations as part of its review of Kavanaugh's background.

The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative group that backs Trump's judicial picks, plans to launch a $1.5 million ad campaign backing Kavanaugh, a spokeswoman said.

"Through the more than 35 years we have known him, Brett has stood out for his friendship, character, and integrity", the letter said.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein listens to an aide during a markup hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sept. 13, 2018, on Capitol Hill.

"It is unfortunate that this allegation is being brought forth so late in the confirmation process, but Dr. Ford's allegation should be investigated", Hoeven said in a statement.

Blunt, a member of Senate leadership, has given full-throated support to Kavanaugh's nomination. Their fellow committee member Rhode Island Democratic Sen.

Republican leadership on the Judiciary Committee have questioned the timing of the revelation of Ford's letter and her allegation, coming just as the committee was preparing to vote on the nomination on Thursday.

Asked if that included testimony under oath at a public hearing before senators, Ms Katz told the CBS "This Morning" programme: "She's willing to do what she needs to do". According to Washington Post reporter Seung Min Kim, Foy said Sunday that the vote had not been rescheduled.

Whatever the case, if the GOP surrenders to what might be a cynical ploy (unless new credible evidence emerges about Kavanaugh), they will be creating a precedent that says every and any unsubstantiated accusation against a Republican, no matter how old it is, should be disqualifying.

Feinstein issued a statement on Sunday afternoon in support of Ford and calling for the FBI to investigate the matter before the Senate advances Kavanaugh's nomination.

But Conway said such testimony "should not unduly delay the vote".
