Kipchoge has won 10 of the 11 marathons he's run.

"Congratulations Eliud Kipchoge for breaking the world record at the Berlin marathon 2018".

Eliud Kipchoge now holds the marathon world record.

An ecstatic Kipchoge cut the tape with glee and excitement written all over his face, thumping his chest with both arms and letting out a scream that told just half the story of how much the record meant for him.

The leading duo went through 25km in 1:12:24, and as Kipsang continued to fade in the second group, Kipchoge left Boit, who dropped out of the race.

"My target was to break the course record and run a sub 2:19:00 time".

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama took to Twitter on Sunday morning to congratulate his fellow Kenyan, posting a picture of the pair at Spurs' training ground holding a club shirt with the runners name on it. "I am really grateful, happy to smash the world record".

Kipchoge kept up the pace to sprint through the Brandenburg Gate and complete a world record run that cements his reputation as one of the greatest runners of all time. By 40 kilometres, reached in 1:55:32, a world record looked a certainty. With already half a marathon behind him, the Kenyan nevertheless managed to run an incredibly quick time.

"I lack words to describe this day", said Kipchoge, a former world champion over 5,000 meters who also won a gold medal running the marathon for the Brazil Olympic Games in 2016.

"They say you can miss it twice but not third time".

"It was hard", Kipchoge said.

The world record stayed in Kenyans hands again after Patrick Makau ( 2:03:38) in 2011, Wilson Kipsang (2:03:23) in 2013 and Dennis Kimettto (2:02:57) in 2014.

The previous track record was set by Mizuki Noguchi of Japan 13 years ago.

A few minutes later Gladys Cherono won the women's race in Berlin in a course record of 2:18:11, making her the fourth fastest woman in history behind Paula Radcliffe, Mary Keitany and Tirunesh Dibaba.
