Trump dismisses Woodward book as a 'joke'

  • Speaking at a rally in Billings Montana on Thursday night Trump took aim at the explosive new book by Bob Woodward and its vivid depictions of White House dysfunction

Colbert, who said he read every page of the book himself, also said he particularly loved the last line, in which Woodward said Trump lawyer John Dowd "knew he could not bring himself to say to the president, 'you're a [expletive] liar".

The Politico/Morning Consult poll found that 61 percent of voters think the administration is chaotic, while 32 percent believe it is running well.

Trump and the White House, along with numerous senior officials including Defense Secretary James Mattis and chief of staff John Kelly, strongly disputed the book's content.

While those quotes may not have made the jacket cover, they highlight the degree of damning allegations found in the pages of Woodward's book.

Trump officials have rushed to distance themselves from the op-ed and from Woodward's book, both of which depict a White House mired in dysfunction, with aides disparaging the Republican president and working to prevent him from making disastrous decisions.

Trump, though, has called the book "fiction". Amazon said Tuesday that Woodward's book was out of stock and would be available to ship in one to three weeks.

But Woodward stands by his reporting. It has a margin of error of 2 percentage points. "And I think the president ought to make immediate and direct action to find out who the conspirators are".

In other tweets Monday morning, Trump claimed that the White House, which has experienced significant staff turnover and other tumult, is a "smooth running machine" and touted economic figures under his leadership.

Trump tweeted Monday that he has been subjected to "Phony books, articles and T.V. "hits" like no other pol has had to endure".

Any book is going to be "selective", and whether the book is "misleading" is certainly debatable, though someone who worked inside the White House is hardly an objective observer.

"Everybody's trying to get me", the president told Porter, the book says.

"We have reprinted six times for a total of seven to meet extraordinary demand - that will put one million books in print before we've even gone on sale", a Simon & Schuster spokesperson said to CNN "Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter.

Charles reported that Barnes and Noble said "Fear" was its fastest-selling book since Harper Lee's 2015 novel "Go Set a Watchman", the long-awaited follow-up to "To Kill a Mockingbird". I'm also reading about democracy and truth and identity and immigration and protest and so much more - and these are all ways about exploring the Trump era without having to focus on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. This, during a conversation on Afghanistan, during which Trump also said, according to Woodward, that Modi told him the U.S. had "gotten nothing out of Afghanistan".
