By installing small exterior cameras on the front doors, Lexus vehicles will provide its drivers with a clearer view of the vehicle's surrounding area. Another advantage the Digital Outer Mirrors have over their conventional counterparts is that they are shaped to resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow, leaving the driver's view unaffected.

Then there are the displays: A pair of 5-inch monitors are attached to the front pillars.

The wing mirrors are replaced with small cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle, with small screens displaying the feed from these cameras on the inside.

In Japanese markets, the 2019 Lexus ES will replace the traditional side mirrors with a new digital camera system.

Tiny cameras in a thin, rain-proof housing capture footage of what's behind the auto and transfer them to screens mounted in the area where the a-pillar meets the dashboard.

Replacing side mirrors with cameras has always been a concept-car flight of fancy, but Lexus will be the first automaker to make this tech a reality for a mass-produced model.

The system automatically enhances the corresponding area―left, right or behind―when the turn signals are activated, or when the transmission is put into reverse.

Because the camera pods are smaller than conventional mirrors, Lexus claims they will allow greater outward visibility, as well as reduce wind noise. Digital Outer Mirrors is an extension of the full display mirror (FDM) digital rear view mirror that Lexus and Toyota already offer.
