  • Florence continues to intensify and East Coast landfall appears imminent (free access)

Florence became the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season this past Wednesday, reaching Category 4 status with maximum sustained winds peaking at 130 miles per hour.

"The risk of other direct impacts associated with Florence along the U.S. East Coast next week has increased".

So vehicles transporting those agricultural goods will not have to be weighed along North Carolina highways, temporarily, while the state of emergency is in effect.

The governors of North and SC and Virginia declared states of emergency to give them time to prepare, and the Navy said ships in Virginia's Hampton Roads area would leave port for their own safety.

Gov. Henry McMaster told a news conference Sunday that people should "pretend, assume, presume that a major hurricane is going to hit right smack dab in the middle of SC and is going to go way inshore". The storm is expected to undergo rapid intensification beginning on Sunday night, and will likely become a major hurricane by Monday.

Florence, which is located 810 miles west of Bermuda, is moving at 5-mph west.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency Saturday because of Florence's potential impact on the state.

South Carolina's governor says residents should count on "a lot of wind and a lot of rain" from Hurricane Florence this week.

Tropical storm Helene is presenting the most imminent danger as it tracks towards the western coast of the African continent, around the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency on Friday and urged residents to use the weekend to prepare.

However, given the uncertainty in track and intensity forecasts at those time ranges, it's too soon to determine the exact timing, location, and magnitude of those impacts. The favorable environmental conditions are expected along the path of this developing tropical cyclone and the system should become a hurricane during the early or middle part of next week. Strengthening into a tropical storm is forecast this weekend and possibly a hurricane early next week as it approaches the Lesser Antilles. Some forecast models have shown Florence slamming into land by late next week, while others indicated the storm would curve away from shore.

Florence continues to strengthen on Sunday and will likely become a major hurricane by Monday.

Loewenthal said the area should prepare to see impacts, including rough surf and unsafe rip currents, as early as Sunday.

In a news release, the Navy said the ships can handle destructive weather better while at sea and that "having the ships underway also makes them ready and available to respond to any national tasking, including any needed disaster response efforts in the local area after the storm has passed".
