Republican reaction to New York Times op-ed: Some concern, some shrugs

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump said, "we're going to take a look at what he had, what he gave, what he's talking about, also where he is right now".

US President Donald Trump struggled to pronounce the word anonymous during his condemnation of a New York Times column that has thrown the White House into turmoil.

Woodward's revelations were supported by the article in The New York Times published anonymously on Wednesday, which said "unsung heroes" were quietly working within the administration to frustrate the president's "worst inclinations". Any leak investigations of classified information tend to go through a complex process at the Justice Department that includes determining whether the information was sensitive and known to few people.

Zaid argued that if the author really intends to curb Trump, there was "greater value" in maintaining their position. "I am proud to serve as a member of President Trump's Cabinet to advocate on behalf of America's 30 million small businesses".

Pence's deputy chief of staff and communications director Jarrod Agen tweeted Thursday: "The Vice President puts his name on his Op-Eds". "I would say Jeff [Sessions] should be investigating the author because it's national security".

Earlier this week, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders called the author of the op-ed "gutless" and demanded the author resign.

It's unclear what possible crime the Justice Department could investigate in this situation. Top administration officials have publicly denied writing it, but according to two unnamed officials who spoke with Axios, the essay speaks for "dozens and dozens" of staffers.

James Dao, the op-ed editor for the Times, said in the paper's Daily podcast on Thursday, "There's nothing in the piece that strikes me as being relevant to or undermining the national security".

That a covert network of officials was operating within the government to derail Trump's agenda became clear in the first months of the presidency. On the other hand, if you think that Donald Trump is a danger to the country, I suppose you think this and other people who are resisting some of Donald Trump's actions is a patriot.

The piece compared Trump unfavorably to the late Sen.

"He is offering $50,000 cash to information that will lead to the identification and termination of the New York Times "anonymous" author", Kirk wrote on Twitter.
