  • Burt Reynolds Cause of Death: How Did the Actor Die?

In a statement to the Press Association, a spokesman for Reynolds said the star died in hospital in Jupiter, Florida, on Thursday morning after suffering a heart attack.

Reynolds is survived by his son, Quinton.

Soon after tributes for the movie icon - who starred in such films as Smokey And The Bandit and Boogie Nights - flooded in. The musician says that Reynolds greeted him with his giant trademark smile and said, "You made my day".

Well known for his many romances, Reynolds' tempestuous relationship with his ex-wife Loni Anderson was key tabloid fodder in the 1980s and the divorce left him millions in debt just when his film career faltered.

He solidified his position as a rising film star with 1974 prison football drama The Longest Yard. Reynolds kept trying to win an Oscar in his later life, with his first nomination coming in 1997 for Boogie Nights. "And I've had a good time through it all".

Reynolds was born February 11, 1936, in Lansing, Michigan, and moved to Riviera, Florida, where his war-hero father Milo was the chief of police. Reynolds also won plaudits for his role on the 1990s television sitcom, Evening Shade. That "was the closest to me, in terms of, I see myself in that character and it was a classic film", Reynolds told USA TODAY.

His acting career began on stage in NY in the 1950s.

Arnold Schwarzenegger called Burt Reynolds a "hero" of his and noted that it was his inspiration that led him to go from being an athlete to one of the world's highest paid actors.

But it was John Boorman's 1972 thriller "Deliverance", which cast Reynolds as outdoorsman Lewis Medlock, that is widely credited for launching his early career.

He later attended Florida State University on a football scholarship, but suffered a major injury and eventually transferred schools.

He was reportedly one of the actors who turned down the role of Han Solo in Star Wars before producer George Lucas offered the part to little-known Harrison Ford. And there's one thing they can never take away: "Nobody had more fun than I did". When it comes to his legacy, the actor said he knows exactly how he wants to be remembered: "He worked hard, he was always on time and knew his lines, and he tried really hard to be a good guy".

An action star who did many of his own stunts, Reynolds was also a charismatic rogue and relentless flirt on-screen, helping to make one of the biggest sex symbols of his time.
