Arizona Gov. Ducey picks Kyl to fill McCain's Senate seat

  • Former Sen. Jon Kyl to replace John Mc Cain in the Senate

Republican ex-Sen. Jon Kyl has been picked to fill the late Sen.

After the announcement, Cindy McCain - the widow of the late Arizona senator - applauded Kyl's appointment.

"We are all saddened by the circumstances that required this appointment and appreciate there was only one John McCain", Kyl said. Kyl said he had traveled with McCain around the world over the years.

Kyl now works as a lobbyist at the law firm Covington & Burling and is helping to shepherd U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh through the confirmation process.

Doug Ducey (R) announced Tuesday that former Sen. One of the first votes he will cast when he is sworn in as senator will be on the confirmation of Kavanaugh to the high court.

Preceded by Trent Lott, Kyl took over the reins as Senate Minority Whip and served under Majority leader Mitch McConnell. He was member of the House of Representative before that (from 1987 to 1995).

If Kyl holds to his plan, Ducey will have to designate another Republican, by law, to keep the seat until 2020.

Kyl said he made a decision to return to the Senate because of his sense of duty "to the state I love", adding, "I'm putting my country first just as this seat's previous occupant did every single day". Kyl will serve until at least the end of the year; should he choose not to serve beyond the remainder of 2018, Ducey will have to name another replacement to serve out the rest of McCain's term.

If Kyl does retire (again) at the end of this year, Ducey could appoint someone who would be able to run for re-election in 2020.

Kyl said he did not "really have a relationship" with President Trump, having met him only once. "I'm hoping that the senator will consider serving longer".

Arizona's other current Senator, Jeff Flake, called Kyl "an excellent choice", in statement released Tuesday, adding, "there is no one more qualified" to serve the state.

"Jon Kyl will be an extraordinary Senator representing an extraordinary state, Arizona", Trump said in a tweet congratulating Kyl. McCain had been absent in the eight months since, as he battled cancer at his home in Arizona.

The Republican Ducey says he hopes that Kyl will serve longer.

An ardent supporter of Kavanaugh, it comes as no surprise that Ducey tapped someone who will vote to confirm him to the Supreme Court.

Republican Jon Kyl cited his sense of duty in accepting the appointment but said he's only committing to serve until the end of the congressional session next January 3.

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
