California sends net neutrality bill to governor's desk

Although Verizon insisted that its throttling was not a net neutrality issue and was simply a mistake because of the tier of data access to which the firefighters were subscribed, a coalition of more than 30,000 California firefighters and emergency personnel has voiced its support for SB 822, saying public safety depends on it. As of now 30 total states have introduced bills to save net neutrality, as well as state governors in NY and Montana signing executive orders to ensure that communications providers must treat all data on the internet equally.

After passing in the Assembly on Wednesday, SB-826 breezed easily through the Senate yesterday. The bill would also need to be signed by Gov. However, because changes were made in the Assembly, the Senate must vote on the legislation again.

The bill took a hit earlier this year when a state Assembly committee watered the bill down.

Republicans voting against the bill expressed concerns over its legality, as well as whether too much regulation would hamper innovation.

"If there's one thing this victory in California shows it's that Internet users are still royally pissed off about the FCC's repeal of net neutrality".

Supporters of Net Neutrality protest the FCC's recent decision to repeal the program in Los Angeles, California, November 28, 2017.

The EFF added, "We're in the home stretch here".

The bill's passage marks the second time in three months that the most populous state has sought to regulate companies on the internet. "California can prove that ISP money can't defeat real people's voices".

California might become the first state in the nation to force publicly traded companies to put women on their boards of directors. If Brown signs it by September 30, it would establish a working group on blockchain by July 1, 2019, to study the technology's uses, risks, benefits and legal implications for state government and the private sector, with input from stakeholders.

"This is about a level playing field and an internet where we as individuals get to decide where we go on the internet, instead of being told by internet service providers or being manipulated by internet service providers into going where they want us to go", the bill's co-author Sen. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat who wrote the bill reports NBC.

A series of four anti-gun bills were approved late this week and are heading to Gov. A California law could have nationwide implications, since internet service providers are loath to operate under multiple sets of rules.
