World leaders and McCain's former colleagues in Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, have shared their favorite memories of McCain, and extolled his status as a senior statesman on the world stage.

The maverick politician, who was a proponent of U.S. power, was taken prisoner of war in Vietnam but after his release helped secure the repatriation of the remains of missing-in-action soldiers.

"The Filipino people extend their deepest condolences to Senator McCain's family and to the people of the United States of America", he said.

"Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did", Obama, who bested McCain in the 2008 presidential election, said in a statement. "Our hearts and prayers are with you!" - but did not offer any words about the man himself.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that Trump had rejected the advice of top aides who advocated for an official statement that gave the decorated Vietnam War POW plaudits for his military and Senate service and called him a "hero". I have tried to serve our country honourably.

The White House also lowered its flag to half-staff on Sunday night in light of the news.

Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Washington, DC.

President Trump and John McCain had feuded for years, and Trump was reportedly not invited to McCain's funeral. Trump, when he returned to Washington, altered his stance, but nearly daily assails the investigation into the election interference. "But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake".

That was the closing goodbye from the letter written by the late Senator John McCain, read aloud by spokesman Rick Davis on Monday, per the Senator's wishes. But Cindy McCain's politics are largely unknown.

While the senator stuck by the party's 2016 presidential nominee, Trump, at times seemingly through gritted teeth - until the release a month before the election of a lewd audio in which Trump said he could kiss and grab women.

Outside the United States, world leaders lauded McCain's role and presence overseas.

John McCain emphasized the importance of unity among Americans and urged the country to not "despair of our present difficulties" in a farewell message prepared before his death.

'McCain became the chief symbol of Russophobia, ' Rossiya 1 television said, adding that he 'couldn't stand Russia's independent foreign policy'.

In 1967, his plane was shot down on a bombing mission over North Vietnam. He truly did put his country first and his life of service to the United States of America will long be remembered. This is not an argument for or against John McCain's legacy as a "war hero", his impact as a politician who voted to stop the Obamacare repeal and against MLK Day and same-sex marriage, or about him saying "No, ma'am".

Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the previous year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers.

Vietnamese people and U.S. citizens in Hanoi have been visiting the grey, concrete monument to offer flowers, incense, flags and other tributes.
