Koepka looking to put a great finish on a great year

  • Tiger Woods says his next PGA TOUR wins are coming soon

"I understand how important these play-offs are and have thought about it a couple of times", Thomas said ahead of the first play-off event, the Northern Trust at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey. Organizers announced on Wednesday that it will be a pay-per-view event from Las Vegas that apparently will encourage the bluster of boxing-match buildups.

Instead Woods took the moment to quietly reflect on what this past year has meant to him.

Biggest disappointment: Dustin Johnson, who overcame a triple bogey to shoot 67 in the second round, had a double bogey and three bogeys in a 1-over 72 on Saturday.

"Yeah, it can change (it) completely", said Kevin Tway, who shot 5-under-par 66 and is tied for first with Jamie Lovemark, Vaughn Taylor and Sean O'Hair. His chances of picking up his first win since 2013 are all but gone this week, but he will have a chance to move up the leaderboard this weekend and gain some all-important FedEx Cup points. He held the lead on the back nine on Sunday at the British Open, finishing tied for sixth, and was in with a chance on the last nine holes at the recent US PGA Championship only to finish runner-up to Brooks Koepka.

The 14-times major champion, who has enjoyed an encouraging return to competition this year after spinal fusion surgery in 2017, mixed two bogeys with a birdie over his closing nine holes.

Jordan Spieth won the FedEx Cup in 2015 by treating the final event at East Lake as if it were a major, going through the same routine he kept in winning the Masters and U.S. Open that year.

The American could claim the world number one ranking with a successful showing in the $9 million (7.76 million euro) event at Ridgewood Country Club. "No matter what I'm ranked in the world, or how many wins I've had, if you're one of the top 30 players over the course of a year, you still have to be doing something right".

"At the time, I needed to try and get rid of the pain".

After that, wherever Woods teed it up, he dominated the proceedings.

Asked how he would characterize the difference, Woods said, "I think that people are more appreciative".

"I think that people are more".

"We all purchase those fights. We all purchase those fights". Next week, only the top-100 golfers will qualify, so that could give some motivation to the guys that are "on the bubble" to bring their A-game and advance to the next round.

Close friends Koepka and Johnson nearly assuredly won't be watching, Koepka said, because Johnson's brother and caddie, Austin, is getting married that day. He was 59th on the Web.com money list, jumping from 107th last week with a third-place finish in Portland.

"I didn't get in the top 25, which was the goal obviously for the season", Norlander said.

As you could probably guess, just like the playoffs in any other sports, the field from here on out will only get stronger.
