Scott Morrison to be Australian PM as Malcolm Turnbull ousted

  • Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott has never forgiven Malcolm Turnbull for ousting him from power

Turnbull, 63, was replaced by the country's treasurer, Scott Morrison, a former tourism industry lobbyist behind Australia's tough refugee policy that confined thousands of men, women and children to government-run centers in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific island nation of Nauru for years.

Morrison emerged as the surprise victor of a party-room vote to replace Turnbull after a week of political chaos in Canberra that marked the emergence of Australia's sixth prime minister in less than 10 years.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke to Mr Morrison yesterday afternoon.

Morrison was chosen by his party's lawmakers in a leadership ballot Friday and will be sworn in later in the day.

'She has been an unbelievable contributor and driver of foreign policy, and an advocate for Liberal values from one end of this country to the other and one end of this world to the other, ' Mr Morrison said.

"There was a determined insurgency by a number of people, both in the party room and backed by powerful voices in the media ... to bring down my prime ministership", he told reporters. "I look forward to building a really strong relationship with him", Ms Ardern said.

Turnbull said the public would be "crying out" for an election because Australians would be "rightly appalled" by what they were witnessing in Parliament this week.

"I think the whole idea of the Liberal Party moving too far to the left is, frankly, fanciful", Mr Wilson told the ABC.

His resignation would cause a by-election that could cost the government its single-seat majority.

"They've got a new fella called Scott Morrison who half of Australia hasn't heard of".

Scott Morrison is the country's sixth prime minister in the last eight years, and the fourth prime minister to be ousted in the last decade.

The Liberal party is the senior partner in the conservative Liberal-National coalition government that has consistently trailed opposition Labor in opinion polls in recent months.

A spokesperson for the prime minister said Mr Morrison used the call to invite Mr Trump to visit Australia.

The bare minimum majority of 43 signatures were provided shortly before the meeting started.

The minister went on to explain how much of an honour it was to serve in the Turnbull cabinet, also giving thanks for the work of Julie Bishop.

Evangelical Christian Scott Morrison, who emerged as Australia's Prime Minister on Friday after a ruling party bun fight, is a key architect of the country's controversial "stop the boats" policy to halt the arrival of seaborne asylum-seekers.

"In Australia it is the old British system, where if your caucus members want to undo you, they can and they can appoint whoever they want", said Nelson Wiseman, a professor of political science at the University of Toronto.
