Gatwick Airport put flight info on whiteboards after screens all broke

  • Some passengers missed flights as staff took to writing flight information on white boards

So imagine the horror that must be unfolding at Gatwick today, where staff have been forced to roll out whiteboards and markers after an IT fail rendered those big screens inoperable.

Staff have resorted to manually writing out crucial information such as gate numbers for each departure from the UK's second busiest airport.

Vodafone provides the service, and said a damaged fibre cable was to blame.

Gatwick Airport's cloud-based flight information displays were only recently introduced to replace a dedicated local computer system.

Staff at Gatwick Airport had to write out flight departure information on whiteboards after the screens stopped working.

In a statement at 17:00 BST, a Gatwick spokesman said the issue had been resolved and flight information was being displayed as normal.

Footage on social media showed staff writing out the flight status of each flight and rubbing them off as updates came in.

Ollie Hurley, who said he was flying to Budapest, added: "We are having to check our flight departure time on a whiteboard?"

The airport set up whiteboards to direct passengers to their gates because sometimes low tech is the best solution to high-tech problems. "This is a top priority for us and we are very sorry for any problems caused by this issue".

"Gatwick would like to apologise to any passengers affected and expects Vodafone to resolve the issue as soon as possible".
