Sanders said at the briefing, "This president since he took office created 700,000 new jobs for African-Americans".

According to Rasmussen's Daily Presidential Tracking Poll, Trump's approval rating among black voters stands at 36 percent, compared with just 19 percent on the same day previous year.

"Correction from today's briefing: Jobs numbers for Pres Trump and Pres Obama were correct, but the time frame for Pres Obama wasn't", she said on Twitter.

Except that wasn't true: the Obama administration oversaw the creation of 2.9 million African-American jobs over the eight years. "I'm sorry for the mistake, but no apologies for the 700,000 jobs for African Americans created under President Trump". "That's 700,000 African-Americans that are working now that weren't working when this President took place".

Sanders said that she has never heard Trump use the "N-word", and cited the administration's economic policies as proof that Trump was not a racist.

Black employment increased by nearly three million jobs between January 2009 and January 2017.

When Obama took office in 2009, 15.5 million African Americans had jobs in an economy filleted by one of the country's worst recessions.

Aside from the apples-to-oranges comparison of black employment under each president, the press secretary's mistake highlighted the CEA's decision to measure the economic records of presidents starting on the day they were elected rather than the day they took office.

The press secretary had given the misleading statistic in response to questions from reporters on Tuesday about claims from former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman that Trump had used racial epithets on the set of his reality show "The Apprentice".

Watters brought up what Sanders said and added, "I'll just let that speak for itself".

Then, Sanders went on to argue that Trump has created more jobs for black Americans than Obama did.
