  • Tiger Woods roars back into contention at USPGA Championship

Welcome to the first breakfast version of Lunch Break. He certainly gets points for showmanship and a willingness to attract some eyeballs, but he doesn't quite get full marks for creativity; Brown said he remembered seeing another fan do something similar about a year ago, and decided this would be the ideal time to go for it. (Next year it will move to the second major, after The Masters, and will be played May 16-19 at Bethpage Black).

This is his seventh PGA.

However, Woods has so far struggled to produce his best form at the business end of tournaments - often fading over the closing holes in contrast to the ruthless finishes he was famed for at his peak.

That much of a lead promises to be formidable for a player like Koepka, who at times has manhandled Bellerive and came into this week brimming with confidence after having won the last two U.S. Opens. And then his round was derailed - but only temporarily - when he came up a foot short of the green on the par-3 sixth hole, went into the water and made triple bogey.

Perhaps it was easy for Woodland not to be overly impressed. He knows what he'll need to do to regain the lead.

"I'm exhausted. I am definitely exhausted", Woods said. "Going to have to make a lot of birdies".

"I'm going to relish it tomorrow, because if it's another five (years), basically you're wheeling me out to pasture at that point".

It's not just the American players who are digging the atmosphere.

"Another low round", Woods said on what it will take to win.

"We have to be aggressive, pars just won't be enough". "You're going to have to make some birdies". But Woods contended on the back nine Sunday in the final two majors of the season a year after not playing competitive golf.

He made birdie on the par-four first hole, again on the back of a great approach shot which left him a one-metre putt, but a three-putt on the par-four fourth hole put him back to even par for the round.

He played 29 holes Saturday, including 11 holes of his second round. Woods hit 10 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens.

This is his first PGA since 2015, when he shot 75-73 and missed the cut.

"More people here this week than I think I've ever seen at a major championship", leader Brooks Koepka said.

The Queenslander is one of only 13 players who have qualified for the playoffs every year since the FedEx Cup's inception in 2007.

"It's hard to make big numbers", Woodland said. After a par at No. 9, he rattled off three more birdies over his next four holes.

Vermeer's 6-over was fifth best among club pros.

After looking for his ball in the reeds at the PGA Championships, Spieth found one, picked it up and hurled it straight into the water. He tapped in for par on the final hole to set the PGA Championship scoring record at 264.
