Infrared data from NASA's Aqua satellite provided forecasters with temperature data that showed the cloud top temperatures in John had cooled indicating the storm was strengthening.

Hurricane Hector, a major storm in the Central Pacific, has weakened slightly as it continues churning closer to the islands.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ileana is trailing behind John and had been expected to become a hurricane, too.

Swells from Hector will produce surf heights from 12 to 15 feet on east-facing shores mainly for the Puna and Kau districts of the Big Island Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The eye of the storm was 290 miles southeast of Hilo and 500 miles southeast of Honolulu by Wednesday morning, the NHC said, and it's projected to come within 150 miles of the Big Island.

As of 5 p.m. ET, Hector had winds of 130 miles per hour and was moving to the west at 16 miles per hour.

Hawaii emergency officials are keeping track of a hurricane that's expected to pass to the south of the islands this week.

The active season in the Pacific contrasts to the relatively quiet season in the Atlantic.

Maximum sustained winds are near 75 km/h with higher gusts and little change in strength is forecast today, with slow weakening expected to begin late tonight or on Thursday. Forecasters note that hurricane-force winds extend up to 35 miles from the center of the storm, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles.

The hurricane center said Kristy was likely to strengthen somewhat in coming days.

The university added: “As is the case with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season for them.
