"My vehicle is still under the flyover, I am waiting to see if and when I can get it back", Marco Rosadini, from Arezzo, Italy, told Italian news agency ANSA. "I saw a huge plume of smoke", Crisina Felicani told Sky TG24.

"It nearly would have been an ordinary accident except for the highly flammable material this truck was transporting", firefighter Carlo Cardinali told Sky.

Video of the incident showed the tanker truck, which contained inflammable materials, slamming into the back of a lorry which had come to a halt because of heavy traffic.

Firefighters said the flames were extinguished some three hours after the explosion, and they were working to cool the area to facilitate operations, ANSA reported.

Two people have been confirmed dead and at least 56 have been injured.
