According to World Health Organisation, there is one reported case of transplacental (mother-to-child) WNV transmission.

West Nile virus is a potentially serious illness that is usually spread to animals and humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

The province said the risk is expected to remain high in the coming weeks.

If you are planning to be outside enjoying this summer weekend, be aware, mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus have been detected in Kent County.

The disease is most commonly transmitted to humans through a mosquito bite.

Several mosquito traps in Canyon County have tested positive for the virus this season, including one collected on July 20 in the Roswell Marsh area off Highway 18 near the Idaho-Oregon border.

Symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph glands, a rash on the chest, stomach or back, and a fever. A rare number of people can experience more significant symptoms. Less than 1 percent of those people contracting the virus will develop severe symptoms. No vaccine has been discovered yet for the infection.

Things like bird baths should be changed at least weekly.

Common places water can accumulate are outdoor features like potted plants and birdbaths, storage bins, kids' toys and pools, rain gutters, and corrugated downspouts.

"Public Health thanks the community for being diligent in removing standing water and eliminating the places where mosquitoes can breed", Callanan said.

Avoid the outdoors from dusk until dawn. Always follow label instructions carefully.
