Trump's tweet on Sunday came several days after the government said more than 1,800 children separated at the US-Mexico border have been reunited with parents and sponsors after a federal judge ordered the reunions.

The president said that Democrats need to get onboard with his immigration agenda, which includes a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border, or risk another government shutdown.

Mr Trump's tweet on Sunday comes two days after the Senate's top Republican, Mitch McConnell, said in a home-state radio interview that a shutdown was not going to happen.

Trump, in a Twitter comment, called for the U.S.to "finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT!".

The previous omnibus spending bill signed by Trump in March included only $1.6 billion in funds for a border wall, far short of the $25 billion Trump requested for his signature campaign promise. The Trump administration repeatedly attempted to shift the blame to the Democrats for its own policy and falsely claimed it had no choice but to separate the families.

Last year, he warned he would end former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which gave temporary legal status to the children of undocumented immigrants.

In recent months, the president has moved to make immigration far more hard that it already is, including separating families seeking asylum, often shipping children of immigrant parents to separate facilities.

"I think we're going to make sure we keep the government open, but we're going to get better policies on immigration", he said on ABC's "This Week".

A House spending bill for fiscal 2019 proposes $5 billion for the project, while a Senate measure proposes the same amount as 2018.

Democrats have long opposed financing Trump's wall but lack the votes by themselves to block House approval of that amount.

The $5 billion is well above the $1.6 billion in the Senate version of the bill, which would finance the Homeland Security Department. Nita Lowey of NY and California's Lucille Roybal-Allard - called the $5 billion a waste that "only further enables this administration's obsession with cruel attacks on immigrants".

A federal judge on Friday urged the US government to focus on finding deported immigrant parents whose children remain in the United States.

Trump then claimed the United States has the "dumbest" and "worst" immigration laws in the world. Under the Trump administration, however, criminal aliens can refer to anyone who has entered the country without documentation.
