U.S. President Donald Trump told Mexico's President-elect in a letter that a quick renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) would bring more jobs for both countries, but warned of a "very different" path otherwise.

Lopez Obrador, who takes office December 1., said he was not aware of any deal Trump was referring to, but he was open to talking with the US, according to Bloomberg.

Lopez Obrador's appointed foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, read the letter at a news conference with Obrador, and said the incoming government's aim is to "start a new chapter in the relationship between Mexico and the United States, based on mutual respect".

Freeland says the solar panel tariff is a violation of NAFTA rules and was imposed even though the United States International Trade Commission determined imports from Canada were not hurting the US economy.

Seade and Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo will later this week travel to Washington to revive NAFTA talks with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

"Today we're sending the world a clear signal we're moving onward with regional integration and free trade", he added.

Canada, however, is willing to agree to everything Mr. Trump wants on autos, now that Washington has dropped its demand for 50 per cent US content on vehicles manufactured in NAFTA countries and sold in the United States, the official said.

In February three Canadian solar panel manufacturers lodged litigation against the American government over the solar cell imports.

Trump last week repeated his threat to pursue individual deals with Mexico and Canada, and the three nations still remain far apart on major points nearly a year after the negotiations first began.

Trump has spoken against Mexican immigration and trade, and Obrador pledged to put Trump "in his place" during his campaign, but despite this history and their differing politics, Obrador said he is optimistic about their working relationship, Reuters reported.

It was a response to a letter Lopez Obrador sent to Trump via a delegation of senior U.S. officials that visited him in Mexico City on July 13.

The top answer was terrorism at 29 per cent.

The research was conducted between February and April and included eight focus groups and a telephone poll of more than 1,500 respondents.
