The sensor is also geared for superior performance in low-light situations by allowing signals from four adjacent pixels to be added raising sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of 12MP.

A 0.8 micron pixel size might seem small and less efficient in capturing the entire light information, especially in low light.

From Sony's press release it's clear the company is making a point to explain that it didn't just increase the pixel count for the sake of being able to brag about this milestone. In short, enhanced images from your smartphone's camera. The ultra-small pixels mean that the new image sensor comes in at just 8mm diagonal despite the impressive pixel count. In fact, more megapixels can actually work against photos taken in low light.

Of course, it's not only the sensor that makes the camera - there's the quality of the lens, the aperture and a whole lot of digital signal processing, both from Sony and from the phone manufacturer which results in the final product.

Sony has announced a new image sensor for smartphones that features 48 effective megapixels (8,000x6,000 pixels).

What this means is that even highly contrasted scenes featuring both bright and dark sections can be captured in detail with little highlight blowout.

Add all of this together with a dynamic range that's four times greater "than conventional products", and it sure does sound like Sony's got a victor on its hands.

Apple heavily relies on Sony's camera sensors for the iPhone. Pricing and Availability: Sony says samples of the new sensor are set to ship in September 2018 for 3,000 JPY (26.93 USD).

'Generally, miniaturization of pixels results in poor light collecting efficiency per pixel, accompanied by a drop in sensitivity and volume of saturation signal, ' Sony says.

It is also capable of recording full frame at 30 frames per second and can also record 4K videos (4096×2160) at 90 frames per second.
