Johnny Manziel traded to Montreal Alouettes

  • Hamilton Tiger Cats quarterback Johnny Manziel throws the ball during first half pre-season CFL football action against the Montreal Alouettes in Montreal

The former Cleveland Browns quarterback was traded by the Tiger-Cats to the Montreal Alouettes Sunday, per ESPN News Services.

Sherman, who coached the Packers offensive line for two years (1997-98) before returning as head coach in 2000, never actually got the chance to coach Manziel on the field in College Station. He signed a two-year contract with Hamilton in May.

Between a team desperate for offense and a coach who is already familiar with him, it appears Manziel might have a path to legitimate playing time in the CFL.

Montreal also got offensive linemen Tony Washington and Landon Rice from the Tiger-Cats for defensive end Jamaal Westerman, wide receiver Chris Williams and first-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021.

"This is a move both Kavis Reed and I felt we needed to make at this time", Sherman said.

"We have acquired an exceptional quarterback with undeniable talent", said general manager Kavis Reed in a statement. "Neither one of us believes in the status quo and felt we needed to shake things up".

Report: Johnny Manziel traded to Montreal Alouettes

He has not played in the National Football League since 2015, by which point he had developed a reputation for partying and alcohol abuse after a series of arrests. Earlier this year, Manziel revealed on Good Morning America he had been diagnosed as bipolar and was undergoing treatment.

'I would sit here today and say that I'm a different person than I was in the past, ' Manziel told San Diego's NBC affiliate. In 2016, a domestic assault charge against Manziel in Dallas was dismissed after he took an anger management course and participated in the NFL's substance abuse program.

Crowley claimed in court papers that Manziel hit her so hard during the incident that she lost hearing in her left ear.

The Johnny Manziel era of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is reportedly over.

Montreal hosts Edmonton on Thursday night. The Alouettes are now sitting in last place in the CFL's East Division with a 1-4 record, including an offense that ranks last in the league in points scored and rushing yards, is tied for last in turnovers, and is seventh of nine teams in passing yards.
