Spieth expecting the unexpected as second Open win beckons

  • Tiger Woods in the hunt and loving it at The Open

Francesco Molinari became the first Italian to win a major, holding off a pack of star names to claim The Open Championship at Carnoustie. He started his move with a 40-foot birdie putt on No. 9, followed with short birdie putts on the next two holes and with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 14th, he put his name atop the leaderboard.

Kevin Kisner, who had begun the day on nine-under with Spieth and Schauffele, suffered a awful start with a double bogey at the second and a bogey at the third to slip back.

It lasted only two holes but there was no mistaking the roars and whoops from the packed galleries, as Tiger Woods briefly held a share of The Open Championship lead yesterday.

Spieth's victories would be the other way around and make it four wins in his last 15 majors, during which time the 24-year-old has also finished second twice, third and fourth.

Kisner, who led after round one and was tied for the lead after round two, stayed on top thanks to a 68, with three birdies and no bogeys.

Large crowds are following the 42-year-old Woods, who has yet to win in his latest comeback.

Molinari's victory ended an American stranglehold on golf's major championships, with a USA golfer having won the previous five.

"It's going to be fun", Woods added.

Earlier, Justin Rose set the tone with the lowest score in Carnoustie's British Open history, a flawless 64 that by day's end had lifted him within five of the lead.

"I was on cloud nine walking down the 18th", he said.

You can't write off Justin Rose either.

"Given what happened last few years, I didn't know if that would ever happen again, but here I am with a chance coming Sunday in a major championship". Spieth hit 8-iron through a gap in the trees for a birdie-birdie start to the back nine, and he dropped only one shot - not four like he did on Thursday - over the four closing holes at Carnoustie for a 67.

He was six shots behind when he finished and figured the margin would be a little wider, which it was. "I don't feel I have to prove anything to anyone at this point".

Rory McIlroy has bogeyed two of his first five holes and is now 3 under, six shots off the lead, while Tommy Fleetwood bogeyed No. 5 to give up the stroke he picked up at the first before making double-bogey at No. 6.

"It's one of my better rounds I've played".

"I want them to see Dad do what he's done for most of his life", he told NBC, "and make them feel and watch what their father can do". So I think the birdie on 18 last night freed me up, and I'm just very happy to be out on this golf course and not down the road somewhere else this morning.

"It's all going to be based off the wind, how much the wind blows", he said after finishing with a one-under 70.

"It was massive to take advantage today", Rose said after the lowest score of his career in any major.
