Trump claims ex-lawyer's phone-taping is 'perhaps illegal'

  • Stormy Daniels’ lawyer again demands release of Cohen’s alleged Trump tapes following NYT report

Today, the president tweeted, "inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer's office... nearly unheard of".

The tape, first reported by The New York Times on Friday but not made public, reportedly features Trump speaking with his longtime attorney Michael Cohen about a payment to former Playboy model Karen McDougal two months before the 2016 presidential election. The affair took place in 2006, while Trump was married to his current wife and shortly after the birth of his youngest son, Baron. Trump tweeted. "The good news is that your favorite President did nothing wrong!" he added. He said the tape would show that Trump makes clear that if there is going to be a payment, it should be done by check, which would be easily traced. The recording, which hasn't been made public, was discovered as part of an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid in April on attorney Michael Cohen's home office and hotel in NY, sources told ABC News.

A report surfaced earlier this week that Cohen supposedly "taped a face-to-face conversation with Donald Trump in which the two men discussed buying the rights to a former Playboy Playmate's story that she had an affair with Mr. Trump more than a decade ago". Giuliani confirmed the existence of the recordings, which are in the possession of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and told reporters Friday that the tapes would be exculpatory for Trump. "Nothing in that conversation suggests that he had any knowledge of it in advance", Giuliani told ABC News.

"In the big scheme of things, it's powerful exculpatory evidence", he added.

Payments made to cover up embarrassing information ahead of the election could violate campaign finance law.

NY law allows one party to a conversation to tape it without the other knowing.

The president's aides, who spent the first part of the week frantically trying to figure out how to clean up the aftermath of the news conference, have had little to say about accusations by women that Trump's lawyers had paid them for their silence in the wake of extramarital affairs.

The White House has said Trump denies having sex with Daniels.

Trump had apparently been unaware of the recordings until he was told about them earlier this week.

Trump has denied the affair.

McDougal says she began a almost yearlong affair with Trump in 2006, shortly after Trump's wife, Melania, gave birth to their son Barron. The source also said that Cohen "is no longer taking a bullet for you (Trump), is no longer a flunky", calling his declaration of independence "his July 4th moment".

Davis said "any attempt at spin can not change what is on the tape".

The New York State Bar Association calls such secret recording unethical.

In her lawsuit against AMI, McDougal said she was happy when AMI bought her story then did not publish it, because she was not anxious for publicity.

The story was never published. As part of the deal, McDougal signed a nondisclosure agreement that prevented her from revealing the affair.
