Trump slams European Union over $5-billion fine on Google

  • The EU has fined Google a record €4.3bn over Android antitrust

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the European Union's $5 billion antitrust fine on Alphabet Inc.'s Google is evidence that the bloc has "taken advantage of the US", and suggested that change is on the way.

In this way, Google has used Android as a vehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine. Google will account for a third of all global mobile ads in 2018, according to research firm eMarketer, giving the company around $40 billion in sales outside the U.S. Google risks losing that traction if it is forced to surrender its real estate on millions of Android phones.

It nearly doubles the €2.42b - about United States dollars $2.8b - that the European Union levied against the company previous year over promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of its search results.

"Today the commission has made a decision to fine Google 4.34 billion euros ($5 billion) for breaching European Union antitrust rules", Vestager told a press conference in Brussels.

All that being said, Fuchsia OS is still very much a work in progress, and it has yet to be signed off as the next major step for Google by either the CEO Sundar Pichai or Android and Chrome chief Hiroshi Lockheimer.

"The FTC should end its decade of inaction and deference, and confront the mounting evidence that Google's business practices have stifled robust competition in a market that is critical to our economy and society", said Democratic Sen. Pichai argues that Google doesn't force anyone to use either of them, that it's easy to install other solutions and that Google lets phone makers and developers preload rival services on its version of Android.

Mr Pichai added the decision from the European Union had the chance to "upset the careful balance" Google has "struck with Android".

Google provides Android free to smartphone manufacturers and generates most of its revenue from selling advertisements that appear along with search results.

We are concerned that today's decision will upset the careful balance that we have struck with Android, and that it sends a troubling signal in favor of proprietary systems over open platforms.
