Trump sides with Russian Federation against Federal Bureau of Investigation at Helsinki summit

  • U.S. President Donald Trump speaks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a press conference after their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki Finland Monday

At their joint press conference in Helsinki, Mr. Trump said that while he had "great confidence" in the US intelligence community, he believed Mr. Putin's "extremely strong and powerful" denial that Russian Federation meddled in the USA election.

"Back then, he was a private individual, a businessman", Putin said.

"The role of the Intelligence Community is to provide the best information and fact-based assessments possible for the President and policymakers", Coats said in a statement.

Some identified the writer as Sam Husseini, the communications director for the Institute for Public Accuracy, who only had one story from past year.

Trump again denied that there had been any collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation.

The president pointed out Putin denied the charge. The two leaders spoke at a joint news conference.

Trump had congratulated his opposite number on Russia's successful hosting of the competition, which came to a climax on Sunday a day before the Helsinki summit. Hours later, he said he has great relations with Merkel. The drama was playing out against a backdrop of fraying Western alliances, a new peak in the Russian Federation investigation and fears that Moscow's aggression may go unchallenged.

"Thank you very much", Trump replied.

Trump: "Mueller's probe is a disaster for our country."

In case President Trump needs reminding, Republican lawmakers let loose on Monday with a refresher: Russian Federation is not our friend. He called it "nonsense" and insisted the Russian state had never interfered and would never interfere in the American electoral process.

The two men held almost two hours of closed-door talks in the Finnish capital Helsinki on Monday.

"I think that we're all to blame", Trump said.

That language stood in stark contrast to the scene on Monday at Finland's presidential palace, where Trump called the Russian leader, accused by the West of all manner of grievances, a "good competitor" and "I think the word competitor is a compliment".

Standing next to the Russian leader, Trump also bashed the Democratic Party, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian election meddling, Hillary Clinton and members of the news media.

"We have to defend Langley, we have to defend the US", Farkas added.

Their opening one-on-one session had been scheduled to run 90 minutes.

Lukyanov, though, said he believes that two issues of substance had come out of the summit.

Russia's foreign ministry responded to that by re-tweeting it with the comment "We agree".

This aspect of his personality was on display again today in his joint press conference with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Making remarks on the Senate floor to open the congressional work week, McConnell made no further mention of the Trump-Putin summit, instead touting Trump's choice of Brett Kavanaugh to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court. They met on the sidelines of world leader meetings in Germany and Vietnam a year ago.

I am confident former CIA Director and current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, DNI Dan Coats, Ambassador Nikki Haley, FBI Director Chris Wray, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and others will be able to communicate to the President it is possible to conclude Russian Federation interfered with our election in 2016 without delegitimizing his electoral success.

While standing next to Putin on Monday, Trump proceeded to attack special counsel Robert Mueller, blame the US for the bad blood between the countries and allow Putin to lie about the interference.
