She said after her 6-3 6-3 win: 'I saw the whole match yesterday, the long match in the semis. After all, she just gave birth to daughter Olympia 10 months ago. Terrific playing from two legends of the court.

Wimbledon Patron, Kate, cheered on Serena Williams with the tennis star's friend Meghan at the Ladies Singles final.

A insane Friday at the All England Club saw Kevin Anderson and John Isner play the longest semi-final match in the tournament's history before Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal completed slightly more than half of the second-longest semi-final.

In reality Williams will probably always be remembered as the greatest of all time regardless, considering that 11 of Court's major wins were at the Australian Open, which at that time was essentially a national championship. "It was such an awesome tournament for me".

Those words proved to be a near-perfect fit description of Kerber's deft 6-3, 6-3 dissection of Serena Williams.

Meghan and Williams first met in 2014, at a charity football match. Serena rushed shots, sailed easy groundstrokes, missed put-aways, failed to seize the big moments and, most importantly, couldn't return Kerber's average serve.

"But to those that do want to go back, you can do it, you can really do it". I have so much to look forward to.

It was Kerber's third title at the majors to add to her Australian Open and US Open triumphs in 2016.

Williams was in full agreement with the 30-year-old German and played down suggestions that it was disrespectful to the women's game. "You have to go through all the things - the good things, the bad things - and then you need to learn", said Kerber, the first German to win Wimbledon since Steffi Graf in 1996.

After the match, the 36-year-old said: "For all the moms out there, I was playing for you today, I tried".

The 2016 Australian Open champion got off to a brilliant start, immediately breaking her well-decorated United States opponent to take a 2-0 lead at the beginning of the match.

Even Kerber couldn't hold back her admiration for her competitor.

"I'm just me and that's all that I can be".

"So I think these two weeks have really showed me that, OK, I can compete".

That's not to say Kerber is only about defending. The American was mostly her own undoing, too: She was responsible for the final's initial six unforced errors. Kerber displayed an uncanny ability to absorb this power by retrieving well on both flanks and whenever the opportunity presented itself, turn the heat back on Williams.

She was seeded No. 25 in Wimbledon this year after the All England Club amended the rules and ranked her in the tournament, instead of following the ranking list that doesn't take into account players' going on maternity leave.
