Mike Pence: I Still Want to See Roe v. Wade Overturned

  • Anti-abortion activists demonstrate in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington Monday

And now that President Trump has announced Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee, activists are looking at all their options to either prevent the decision from being overturned, or make sure state laws are in place to protect abortion access.

In picking a replacement for Anthony Kennedy, the president tilts the philosophical balance of the high court.

Critics of the governor, including his Democratic primary challenger Cynthia Nixon, says Cuomo did not do enough during the past few election cycles to get more Democrats elected to the Senate to pass the Reproductive Health Act. "Now more than ever we need experienced leaders who understand the importance of protecting access to abortion in New York state", said Robin Chappell Golston, president of Planned Parenthood's New York State political arm. "He's going to have all he can handle to handle current cases that come before the court, so I doubt seriously that that's really a legitimate concern". She's with me now. "We do not ask this court to rule that abortion is good or desirable in any particular situation", Weddington argued before the court on October 11, 1972. The group attempts to frame him as "a vote to end Roe v. Wade, criminalize abortion, and punish women".

Mary Ann Dzuback, chair of the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, suspects that conservative justices will continue chipping away at reproductive choice, rather than mount a frontal assault on the Roe decision that has stood since 1973.

Working from the inside at the Supreme Court, Fitzpatrick said justices are reluctant to overturn past decisions.

Justice Kennedy, who was often considered the swing vote, occupies a far more liberal position in the system than Kavanaugh does. I have found no one who thinks the government should control your liver, brain, heart, stomach, so why the uterus?

Nixon says her mother had an illegal abortion in NY before the 1970 law decriminalized the procedure in the state. It made it much more hard, with conditions about what the room had to look like and what the - how wide the hallways had to be and all kinds of things.

Bernier: I want to play you some audio of Brett Kavanaugh talking about Roe v. Wade during his 2006 confirmation to the D.C. Circuit.

Roe v. Wade changed that, but it brought on something other than freedom of choice. If Roe is overturned, the legality of abortion will be decided by individual states.

WEDDINGTON: Under the court's decision, privacy is not meant to be a one-state deal. "And I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and the American rule of law".

KING: I'm wondering if I can finish up with a personal question.

In Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the court "said you can't create an undue burden with those regulations" placed by states on women seeking abortions, Shumaker said. People need to understand you can't sit back and wait.

But some reproductive-rights advocates, while fighting to preserve Roe, point out that if abortion loses its federal protection, women will still have more resources for self-managed abortion than the pre-Roe generations.

Schumer noted Trump tapped Kavanaugh from a list of 25 candidates who were vetted and approved by the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation, "special interest groups devoted to overturning Roe and striking down the Affordable Care Act".
