This is the second time Faid has made a daring escape from prison.
Three accomplices, who reportedly had Kalashnikovs, extracted Redoine Faïd from the Seine-et-Marne prison on Sunday.
It said "an armed commando landed in a helicopter in the courtyard as the prisoner was in the visiting room" of Reau Prison, south of Paris. Gunmen then took Faid from the visiting room where he was and fled in the helicopter, the sources said. He carried out that escape "with explosives hidden in tissue packs", according to The Associated Press, and was apprehended again just weeks later at a hotel. The unarmed wardens ran for their safety and raised the alarm.
Faid's accomplices took hostage a flying instructor from a small flying school in Fontenay-Trésigny commune, and ordered him to fly to the prison.
This wasn't the first attempt of the 46-year-old to break out of prison.
The brochure included no mention of a courtyard - large enough for a light utility helicopter such as, say, an Aerospatiale Alouette II - that would, notably, be the only part of the prison not covered by "anti-helicopter netting", according to the Associated Press.
A wanted notice for Faid said he drove off in a utility truck.
Once they had their man in the helicopter they flew it right across the city of Paris before abandoning it near to the Charles de Gaulle Airport in the north east of the city.
They were then picked up in a black Renault vehicle before changing to a white van for continuing their escape.

But his stiffest sentence came this year, when he was sentenced to 25 years over a botched 2010 robbery in which policewoman Aurelie Fouquet was killed. All the hostages were released unharmed.
