Larger protests are being planned for Saturday in Washington, D.C., and cities around the country under the banner of #FamiliesBelongTogether.
Some 2000 children remain separated from their parents, despite President Donald Trump's executive order ending the controversial policy.
Several hundred people gathered at Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids to protest recent immigration issues, including the separation of children from their families at the southern border.
Hundreds of women, wrapped in metallic silver blankets, referencing the duvets given to migrant children in detention centers, occupied the Senate office building in Washington DC after marching down the streets of the city chanting "Shame!"
In all, Capitol police arrested at least 575 women for the misdemeanor offense of unlawfully demonstrating in the Capitol. But the White House has yet to announce how it plans to handle the thousands of infants and children who were already placed in federal custody.
Though many at the rallies were seasoned anti-Trump demonstrators, others were new to activism, including parents who said they felt compelled to act after heart-wrenching accounts of families torn apart. "We have a situation where the Trump administration seems to be aiming to detain families", said Karthik Ganapathy, a MoveOn.org spokesman.
Wearing stickers that said "Deport Trump" and "F*** Trump" shirts - how lovely - the protesters chanted slogans like "No ban no wall, America is home to all".
"What's next? Concentration Camps?" one marcher's sign read.
"Forcibly separating children from their parents is not about 'deterrence, ' or the legal technicalities of law, or illegal immigration, or anything else President Trump has claimed to justify his latest and most odious outrage", the daily wrote.
Her jacket had "I really don't care".
"In the span of just six weeks, DHS (the Department of Homeland Security) separated almost 2,000 children from their parents".
Following a national and global outcry over the chaotic splitting up of families that left parents in the dark about what happened to their children, President Donald Trump reversed course. They've also posted downloadable posters and protest signs.
Rallies were to take place in 750 cities big and small all over the country, Galland said, as people stand up for the rights of migrant families.
More than 2,000 children who arrived illegally in the United States with adult relatives were separated from them and placed in detention facilities or with foster families around the United States.
Trump says illegal immigration fosters crime and he implemented a "zero tolerance" policy in May to prosecute all immigrants apprehended for entering illegally. She said she had been arrested at demonstrations three or four times since she became politically active after Trump's election.
"I'm a mom, and I think everyone I know that I've talked to about this issue has had a very visceral reaction", Sharaf said.
