Mexico loses to Sweden 3-0 but advances after Germany's defeat

  • Mexico goal is to win group not just qualify for next round

Mexico survived a penalty scare as the referee stopped the game to review VAR, then refused to revise his initial judgment.

Mexico's Edson Alvarez had an own goal in the 74th minute.

Mexico came into the game at the Yekaterinburg Arena in the driving seat in a group where all four teams, including South Korea, could qualify, but they appeared the more nervous. Sweden topped the group on goal difference.

Sweden have moved on from the off-field issues that dominated the headlines after their defeat by Germany and are determined to beat Mexico for a place in the last 16, coach Janne Andersson said on Tuesday.

"I'm so incredibly proud, moved nearly, by the thought of how we performed in the match".

Berg punctuated the match when his shot hit the side-netting in first half stoppage time, which proved the last kick of the half. Granqvist stepped forward, and the Sweden captain found the top corner with a wonderful effort to double his team's lead.

Berg posed repeated problems for the Mexican defence, first flicking wide with his back to goal, and later firing a well-struck shot that was acrobatically turned over the bar by goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Switzerland finished the group stage with five points, two behind Brazil, and will play Group F victor Sweden on Tuesday.

Germany, the clear favorite in this match, generated danger early on, but could not make it count.

Juan Carlos Osorio's side, so brilliant in two previous wins over Germany and South Korea, should have at least a goal from their underwhelming performance but for woeful Vela header in the closing stages.

When the yellow card was shown to Gallardo, there were just 15 seconds on the clock, setting a new record for the fastest yellow card ever in a World Cup match. "That match made us stronger, more confident".

At the interval, with the game also goalless in Kazan, Mexico and Germany were going through.

Janne Andersson has once again criticised Germany for the "scornful" celebrations that followed their late victor against his Sweden team last weekend.

Even in Yekaterinburg, almost 500 miles away, the Mexican fans expected Germany to score. "When we arrived here in Russian Federation, the only person who had a big question mark over his head was me, not the national squad." the 56-year-old said of leading his first Mexican World Cup squad.

Paulinho and Thiago Silva scored a goal each to give the five-time champs first place in Group E. "We don't need to look at who's not there, we need to look at who will be able to play".

"We have six points but never in our minds did we think this was going to be an easy group", striker Javier Hernandez told a pre-match press conference.
