  • World Cup 2018 Saudi Arabia Egypt Play For Pride In Group A Dead Rubber

Mohamed Salah signed off from Russian Federation with a goal but saw his Egypt team suffer a late defeat as Saudi Arabia snatched a 2-1 win in an entertaining game in Volgograd.

Regardless of what happens in the game - which was tied 1-1 at halftime - El-Hadary has broken Colombia keeper Faryd Mondragon'sWorld Cup age record of 43 years and three days.

But the veteran's record-breaking afternoon got better in the first half as he faced Fahad Al-Muwallad's penalty.

That changed in the 41st minute when the Asian side were awarded a penalty for Ahmed Fathy's handball.

The Middle East nation were handed another chance from the spot after a foul by Ali Gaber, and this time they made no mistake as Salman Al faraj converted easily on the stroke of halftime.

At 45 years and 161 days, El Hadary is now the oldest World Cup player ever.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt will try to avoid finishing last in Group A as they bow out of the World Cup on Monday, a disappointing end to the tournament in particular for Egypt and their usually prolific striker Mohamed Salah.

The two teams came into their final group game having already been eliminated from the competition following defeats to Uruguay and hosts Russian Federation.

Egypt, meanwhile, has scored once, in a 3-1 loss to Uruguay on a goal from Mohamed Salah.

Mohamed Salah's neatly-taken lob over the onrushing goalkeeper looked to have knocked the wind out of the Saudi sails, and they nearly conceded a second to the Liverpool forward immediately afterwards.

With two games played, Saudi Arabia are one of just four teams still without a goal at this World Cup, joined by Morocco, Peru and Costa Rica.

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) president Hany Abo Rida was quoted by local media as saying that Salah would not be leaving the World Cup early despite his team's elimination.

The Liverpool forward put Egypt ahead but wasted a golden opportunity to double the lead, giving Saudi Arabia the chance to claw their way back into the game that was settled by a 95th-minute victor by midfielder Salem Al-Dawsari.

Always available for the ball, the 28-year-old dictated the game for Pizzi's side with his penetrative passing and accurate crossing. However, having failed to take their chances in the first half, the team were unable to find a way through the opponent's tightly packed defence in the second and ended up slipping to defeat.
