Efforts are on to land LeBron, George, Paul et al

  • Lakers add German big man Moritz Wagner to young core ahead of free-agent sweepstakes

George has frequently been mentioned as a player who could team up with James to go to a team like the Lakers.

Of course, the Lakers are still the favorites to land LeBron James.

Moritz Wagner speaks to the media after being selected by the Los Angeles Lakers at the 2018 NBA Draft on June 21, 2018 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

And according to the site, that player might be former MI big Moe Wagner.

A week ahead of the June 29 deadline that LeBron James has to exercise his $35.6 million contract option for next season, Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman says he and James' representatives have already established a "good dialogue".

Given the fact that Brook Lopez is an unrestricted free agent and might not return as well as the idea that the Lakers might not match whatever restricted free agent Julius Randle is offered by another club, some minutes could immediately open up for Wagner.

While it's commonplace for players selected in the NBA Draft to participate in Summer League, teams also fill out their rosters by way of signing those who went undrafted. What they do have, however, is the potential to surround James with veteran star power, while appealing to his off-the-court desires of growing his enterprise and situating his family.

All of these things are self-evident, and that last note is of particular importance.

Thursday night's draft came a little more than a week before what could be the Lakers' most important free agency period since Shaquille O'Neal signed in 1996. Ben Simmons' relationship with the veteran superstar has been discussed to death, but his and the team's desire to bring in James can't have gone unsaid up until this point.

With the 2018 NBA Draft in the books everyone has returned their attention back to LeBron James and where he will be playing next season.

If they don't want to re-sign him at a lower cost, it's not a certainty he gets an National Basketball Association job next season. The Oklahoma City Thunder took a chance by trading for him last summer in the hopes they could convince him to stay long-term, but they failed to get out of the first round of the playoffs in a relatively disappointing campaign.

Of course, there are other players available, and as ESPN's Brian Windhorst has said, James can make virtually any situation happen if he wants to.
