  • Blemishes moving around on her face turned out to be parasitic worm

According to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine, the cause was a mobile parasitic worm.

"A physical examination showed a superficial moving oblong nodule at the left upper eyelid", her doctor wrote in a case report.

Doctors say the worms are not trying to use humans as a host. The 32-year-old first experienced the development on her face after she visited a rural area outside Moscow.

Ten days after she first noticed it, the worm had crawled all the way down into her lip, causing it to swell up.

An Oregon woman made headlines earlier this year when she yanked a worm from her inflamed eye, National Geographic reported.

Here's something uncomfortable to think about: A worm moving around under the skin on your face.

The patient reportedly told physicians she'd traveled outside Moscow to rural Russian Federation, where she'd been the victim of a lot of mosquito bites.

A related worm species is known as "heartworm" in dogs.

That said, the parasites usually die in the skin and are easily removed. However, luckily, these worms can nearly never reproduce in humans, and all symptoms usually disappear quickly if the worm is removed - so if you've noticed any unusual lumps moving around your body after a mosquito bite, you should probably get to a doctor.

It's relatively harmless for humans.

. The CDC notes that treatment for humans typically involves removal of the nodule - such as with the Russian woman - with no other medical treatment usually necessary. These thread-like worms naturally infect dogs, cats, foxes and other wild mammals, and typically live in the tissue under the skin, according to a 2011 report of a similar case.

Humans are aberrant hosts for, which means that our bodies do not normally host the parasite and don't give it ideal conditions for it to mature.

The report details how the woman from Russian Federation became the host of a parasitic worm after being bitten by a mosquito.

The bad news is that the number of human cases is increasing - and spreading.

For now, Americans don't have to worry about this particular worm burrowing around under their skin. The mosquitoes that tend to inject these parasites through their bites are generally found in certain regions of Asia, Africa, and Europe.

To avoid mosquito bites wherever you are, the CDC recommends wearing insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers when outdoors, and using screens or nets in the home.
