  • The sabotage comes as Tesla ramps up Model 3 production

Tesla, one of the world's leading electric vehicle maker, instituted a lawsuit against an ex-employee on Wednesday alleging that he transferred "gigabytes" of confidential data to third parties.

"Relying on the internal data that he hacked from Tesla's manufacturing operations system, Tripp incorrectly stated that Tesla has generated almost $150 million in scrap at the Gigafactory in 2018", the company wrote.

Electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc's move last week to cut nine percent of its workforce will sharply downsize the residential solar business it bought two years ago in a controversial $2.6-billion (R35.1-billion) deal, according to three internal company documents and seven current and former Tesla solar employees.

Tripp, the Tesla lawyers said, had been "disruptive and combative" with colleagues and had grown disgruntled after being assigned to a new role. The lawsuit accuses Tripp of stealing confidential photos and video of Tesla's manufacturing systems and other trade secrets.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been quieter than usual on Twitter for the past day - maybe because he's too busy emailing a former employee he called out for "sabotage" and proceeded to sue for stealing trade secrets and data about the electric vehicle company. It also says Tripp acknowledged writing the hacking code and sending proprietary data to third parties.

Last week, Tesla laid off about 9% of its employees in an effort to cut costs and eliminate redundancies, CEO Elon Musk said.

Despite a lack of meaningful information from Tesla, additional details have emerged regarding the company's plans to reduce its workforce. "The data I was collecting was so severe, I had to go to the media", His claims have not been verified. Elon Musk has been so wrapped up in straightening out the production mess with the Model 3, the solar business was left to sink or swim. "I certainly would not have initiated contact, nor would I even know his personal email address, and it was probably unwise for me to have responded", he said in an email.

Tesla refuted Tripp's claims to being a whistleblower and said his claims are exaggerated or misconstrued.

UPDATE: In an email to Cheddar on Friday, Tesla said Tripp is in no way a whistleblower and that he stole information through duplicitous means. I didn't hack into system. He told the Post that "Elon was lying to investors about many cars they were making". Tripp also claims that Tesla had inflated the number of Model 3 sedans produced in the last week of the first quarter of 2018, and that the company was producing a large amount of scrap materials.

SolarCity founder Lyndon Rive, who is Musk's first cousin and left Tesla past year, did not respond to a request for comment.
